OpenAI Pursues $30 Billion Raise at $1.25 Trillion Valuation to Delay Public Listing

The ChatGPT creator is seeking massive private capital to maintain its trillion-dollar status and complicate the path for rival Anthropic's upcoming debut.

For investors watching the artificial intelligence sector, the coming months may look very different from the public market debut many had anticipated. OpenAI is reportedly moving to secure another massive round of private funding, a move that could push its valuation past the one-trillion-dollar mark. This strategic pivot suggests the company intends to stay private for the time being rather than immediately listing on a public stock exchange.

According to sources speaking to CNBC, the AI lab is working to raise up to $30 billion in a new funding round. The terms currently under discussion would value the company at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis. The round is expected to be led by the investment firm Coatue, alongside investors from the United Arab Emirates. These details mark a significant shift in the financial trajectory of the company that created ChatGPT.

This latest report follows a similar story published by Bloomberg one month ago. That earlier report indicated the company was seeking $30 billion at a slightly higher valuation of $1.4 trillion. Because terms are still being negotiated between the parties, the final figures could shift before the round is closed. The discrepancy in reported valuations highlights the fluid nature of these high-stakes private deals.

The participation of UAE-based investors may bring more than just capital to the table. CNBC reports that the funding could be paired with a separate agreement to secure additional computing capacity from the region. This infrastructure deal would be crucial for OpenAI, which relies on vast amounts of processing power to train and run its large language models. OpenAI has declined to comment on the status of these negotiations.

If OpenAI successfully closes the round at a valuation exceeding one trillion dollars, it would set a new record as the most valuable private company in history. Such a milestone would raise the bar significantly for the company's eventual initial public offering. The high valuation would mean that public investors would be buying into a company with an already massive equity base, potentially affecting future stock performance expectations.

The company had previously signaled its intent to go public. OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June of this year. That filing came shortly after its last funding round in March, which valued the company at $852 billion on a post-money basis. The new $1.25 trillion valuation represents a substantial jump from the earlier figure, reflecting the continued surge in interest for AI assets.

The high valuation of OpenAI also has implications for its primary rival, Anthropic. Many industry observers believe that Anthropic's IPO is closer to becoming a reality than OpenAI's. Rumors suggest that Anthropic's public S-1 filing could appear at any moment. The financial success of OpenAI's private round could influence how the market perceives the valuation of Anthropic's debut.

CNBC reports that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public offering. This target is ambitious, given that the company recently raised $65 billion in May. That previous round valued Anthropic at $965 billion, a figure that many at the time considered the final major private round before an IPO. Anthropic also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, mirroring the timeline of its competitor.

The race to the trillion-dollar club is now a defining feature of the AI economy. For the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley business communities, these valuations represent a shift in how technology giants are financed. Whether through private mega-rounds or public listings, the capital requirements for leading AI firms are reshaping investment strategies across the region and beyond.
