Rep. Keith Self Maintains Campaign Schedule After FBI Seizes 17-Year-Old Accused of Plot

The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested a 17-year-old resident of McKinney on October 5 for allegedly plotting to assassinate Representative Keith Self. Self is currently seeking a third term in office representing Texas' third congressional district. The campaign confirmed the details to NBC 5, noting that the team learned of the federal action through the U.S. Capitol Police on October 6.

Officials stated that investigators believed the teenager had been radicalized and was under federal surveillance. According to the information provided to the campaign, the suspect was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The target of this alleged operation was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was expected to draw former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests.

Representative Self described the response as a calculated increase in situational awareness rather than a panic. He noted that his extensive military background, including multiple deployments to combat zones, helped him process the threat with composure. He explained that while colleagues might react with shock, he focused on determining whether the suspect was a lone wolf. He added that his wife, a military spouse for 25 years, shared his serious and measured perspective on the risks involved.

The congressman acknowledged that he has received threats in the past, but emphasized that this incident was distinct because it resulted in an arrest. His team stated that while previous warnings existed, none had escalated to the level of federal intervention. The campaign believes the potential severity of the incident warranted the heightened security measures they implemented as early voting began across the state.

Despite the specific threat targeting the October 17 fundraiser, Self attended the event as planned. He reported that he judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans. He described the experience as delightful and noted that nothing unexpected occurred. The congressman has since returned to his regular campaign activities, including polling places greetings and voter meetings. He stated that the incident will not deter him from alerting the American public to what he describes as a significant political ideology.

The alleged plot has added a layer of tension to Self's campaign, which has taken a prominent stance against the implementation of Sharia law in the United States. In September, the Representative introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. This legislative move coincides with local debates in his district regarding religious infrastructure and zoning.

McKinney, a city within the third district, recently saw its city council unanimously approve a site plan for the expansion of a local mosque. The vote in August was described as contentious, following hours of public comment. The decision was later followed by an effort to recall several council members. The juxtaposition of the federal investigation with these local zoning battles has drawn attention to the political dynamics in the region.

Evan Hunt, Self's opponent in the upcoming midterm election, condemned the alleged assassination plot in a social media post. Hunt's response signals a temporary alignment of candidates in the face of a security threat. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for further information but has not yet responded to inquiries as of the publication of this report.

The investigation remains active, and the identity of the 17-year-old suspect has not been released to the public. The case highlights the evolving nature of security threats against elected officials in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions, where local political disputes often intersect with broader national ideologies.

As the campaign continues, the focus remains on the integrity of the electoral process and the safety of the candidates. The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities facing legislators who navigate both local community issues and national political narratives. The FBI and Capitol Police are expected to provide further details as the investigation progresses.
