DeepSeek Secures Massive Funding Amidst US Federal Pushout

The Hangzhou-based AI firm closed a $15 billion round just two days after Washington ordered federal agencies to strip its technology from their networks.

The timing feels almost defiant. Just forty-eight hours after the United States government ordered federal civilian agencies to pull DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence tools from their systems due to security worries, the Chinese lab announced a massive new funding haul. According to reports from Bloomberg, the company has raised approximately $15 billion. That sum translates to roughly 100 billion yuan, marking one of the largest single funding rounds in Chinese history.

This financial boost lands at a pivotal moment for the Hangzhou-based startup. The move signals that DeepSeek is not shrinking back from the U.S. market despite the regulatory pressure. Instead, the firm is using the fresh capital to accelerate its growth. The company aims to expand its reach in both domestic and international markets while continuing to build out its infrastructure.

The investors lining up for this round include heavyweights in the Chinese tech and energy sectors. Reports indicate that potential backers include Tencent, the giant behind the popular messaging app WeChat. Another key player is CATL, a major manufacturer of batteries. Their participation suggests that big industry players are betting heavily on DeepSeek’s future trajectory.

This latest injection of cash follows a busy year for the startup. In June, DeepSeek completed an investment round that brought in more than $7 billion. At that time, the company was valued at $50 billion. Then, in July, reports surfaced that the firm was seeking an additional $1.5 billion. That later round would have placed the valuation at around $71 billion. The company has also been exploring the possibility of an initial public offering in China as early as next year.

The influx of billions is part of a broader global trend where investors are pouring money into AI companies to stay competitive in the fast-evolving tech race. China is seeing a surge in activity. For instance, Moonshot AI, the developer behind the Kimi model, secured $2 billion in May at a $20 billion valuation. Earlier this month, Manus AI raised over $500 million. Public markets are also reflecting this momentum. Zhipu AI and MiniMax, both of which went public in Hong Kong in January, currently hold market capitalizations of roughly $29 billion and $7.2 billion, respectively.

DeepSeek’s expansion plans are focused on two main areas. The company is ramping up spending on AI infrastructure to handle increased demand. It is also developing open models that can be used by developers and businesses worldwide. This strategy positions the firm to compete directly with established players in the United States and other regions. The aggressive growth could also intensify competition among other domestic rivals in China who are vying for market share.

The startup was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng. He previously co-founded High-Flyer, a Chinese quantitative hedge fund that provided the early financial backing for DeepSeek. Liang maintains a significant control over the company. Following the earlier funding rounds, corporate ownership data analyzed by WireScreen indicates he retains an estimated 81.6% stake in the Chinese operating entity.

The firm first gained global attention in early 2025. It released a free-to-use, open-weight reasoning model that quickly challenged the dominance of major U.S. AI companies. That launch put DeepSeek on the map as a serious contender in the global AI landscape. Now, with the new funding secured, the company is poised to push further into the market. DeepSeek did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the new funding details.
